Alberta Power Market Snapshot: August 2026

Summer typically brings heat and price volatility, but August 2026 delivered a different set of records to the Alberta power market. Driven by milder weather and strong generation output, prices remained subdued, continuing the structural shift we have been tracking for a while.

Here is our 5-minute summary.

The Data

As usual, we start with the big picture. Compared to last August, this year the month saw milder conditions overall, with a distinct lack of the major, multi-day heatwaves that often drive summer peak pricing.

While demand peaks were kept in check by the temperate weather, inflexible power generation—specifically gas-fired Cogen, Wind, and Solar—remained strong. This combination of muted peak demand and strong inflexible supply encapsulates the accelerating rise of temporary excess supply, in turn resulting in (very) low prices.

The monthly price heatmap accordingly illustrates the regular zero-dollar hours (black) alongside widespread extremely low (grey) and low (green) pricing, punctuated only by brief, sporadic spikes into high (purple) and peak (red) territory.

Heat Map of August 2026 hourly Alberta power pool prices

Black: zero dollar hour - “Excess Supply”

  • Light Grey: CAD 0.01 - 20/MWh - “Insufficient”

  • Green: CAD 20.01 - 60/MWh - “Marginal”

  • Cyan: CAD 60.01 - 150/MWh - “Full-cycle”

  • Purple: CAD 150.01 - 800/MWh - “Expensive”

  • Red: CAD 800.01 - 999.99/MWh - “Peak”

The result for this August was pool prices averaging CAD 45.71/MWh, which is 9.2% below last year's August.

As the chart below shows, while it is not an abnormal price level, it is toward the lower end when compared to prior years, especially given that prior year data has not been adjusted for inflation.

Prices are not inflation-adjusted

Alberta's electricity market regulator, the Market Surveillance Administrator (MSA), highlighted in its recent quarterly reports that current price levels are insufficient for all types of power generators to recover their full-cycle costs. Given where August prices landed, that situation is still in place.

However, this environment continues to present an opportunity for flexible consumers. Our proxy for the average cost of highly flexible loads—the average cost of the daily lowest-cost 8 hours—came in at a very low CAD 13.32/MWh. This marks the second-lowest August level ever recorded for this metric.

This ultra-low flexible cost was driven by yet another new all-time August record for zero-dollar hours, which hit 48 for the month. As we have noted in previous snapshots, this accelerating frequency of zero dollar pricing is the clearest evidence of the structural shift underway in the Alberta power market.

On the demand side, average Alberta Internal Load (AIL) was only about 0.9% higher than last August, sitting at 10,283 MW. Peak hourly AIL came in at 11,896 MW, which remained below last August's peak of 12,005 MW.

Implications

Again we see clear trends: structural excess supply during periods of low to normal load creates significant opportunities for storage and flexible loads, while presenting growing challenges for inflexible generation.

The “good old days” of set-and-forget power procurement are definitely over, at least for those power consumers that want to stay competitive—it literally pays to be proactive.
